Break Free From Compromise and Enjoy Greater Success!
Posted on July 23rd, 2010
Do you frequently sacrifice what you truly want for “the greater good”? Is your life all give and no take? Do you often find yourself ignoring your needs, wants or values while putting everyone else in your life first?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you may be allowing compromise to significantly limit your success.
Not all compromise is bad – in fact, in many situations it’s the best (and perhaps the only) way to move forward. Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to view compromise as a virtue – as if constantly negating our needs and our plans somehow makes us better people. Being flexible and adaptable is a good thing – but if taken to the extreme, this “virtue” quickly becomes a vice. Excessive compromise can become a black hole in your life, sucking away your energy, your drive, and ultimately your ability to create the life you desire.
5 Steps to Breaking Free from Excessive Compromise
1. Recognize the “benefits” you’ve been getting from compromising. Perhaps compromising has allowed you to maintain a certain image or the benefit might simply be the ability to avoid standing up for yourself. Whatever benefit you’ve derived from compromising, the first step is to recognize it and be honest with yourself about it. As with anything, you have to identify the problem before you can effectively address it.
2. Make a list of ten ways you are compromising your needs, wants or values (e.g. regularly staying late at work at the expense of your personal life).
3. Define and take the necessary steps to eliminate those compromises (i.e. make a commitment to yourself to leave work at 5pm every day and then make plans at 5:30pm every day to ensure you actually leave the office).
4. Commit yourself to living free of excessive, unhealthy compromise. Define clear boundaries (beyond which compromise is not healthy or beneficial for you) that you will not cross.
5. Repeat steps 1-4 until you’re fully enjoying success without compromise!
As you become more aware of compromise in your life – and what it’s been costing you – you will be able to take the necessary steps to address it. Stop compromising your success today!
